Singapore’s HDB flats are often associated with modern, space-efficient living, but one homeowner is rewriting the rules by transforming their unit into a stunning Victorian-inspired space. What makes this renovation even more groundbreaking? It started as an Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) experiment before coming to life in the real world.

The Vision: A Victorian Dream in an HDB Flat
Victorian design is synonymous with grandeur—ornate details, intricate moldings, rich colors, and antique furnishings. The challenge? Incorporating these elements into the typically minimalist and compact layout of a HDB flat. The homeowner, Mr Abdul Hamid, partnered with our interior designer and tech specialists to craft a highly detailed digital version of their dream home before a single nail was hammered.
AR & VR: The Game Changers in Interior Design
With advancements in AR and VR, homeowners can now visualize every detail of their renovation before committing to physical changes. The Victorian-themed HDB flat was first conceptualized using VR simulations, allowing the homeowner to walk through the virtual space, adjust lighting, furniture placement, and textures in real time. AR further helped by overlaying digital previews onto the existing space, providing a clearer understanding of proportions and design feasibility.

From Pixels to Reality
Once the digital concept was perfected, the real work began. Here’s how the transformation unfolded:
Wall Treatments & Molding: Digital previews helped determine the ideal placement for intricate crown moldings and wainscoting, ensuring they complemented the space without overwhelming it.
Furniture & Décor: The Vintage-inspired sofa was an heirloom kept in mint condition. All the carpentry are customised to fit the HDB layout while maintaining an authentic Victorian charm.
Lighting: Chandeliers and antique sconces, first tested in AR, were carefully installed to create the warm, opulent glow characteristic of Victorian homes.
Color Palette: Deep jewel tones and pastel hues, previewed in VR, were selected to enhance the cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere.

The Future of Interior Design in Singapore
This project is a testament to how technology is revolutionizing the interior design industry. AR and VR allow homeowners to take calculated creative risks, bridging the gap between imagination and execution. As Singaporeans explore new ways to personalize their homes, the integration of digital tools in renovation planning will likely become the norm rather than the exception.
